No Leopard, o SpotLight não acha arquivos do sistema, vc precisa primeiro entrar na pasta Library, fazer a busca e escolher o diretorio atual para que ela seja feita nele (e nas pastas internas). Isso vale tanto pra /Library como para ~/Library.

Problema com USB pode ser com qualquer periferico... Tentou desconectar tudo menos teclado e mouse para ver se tem algum dando conflito?

Parece que tem algo de errado com seu Mail.app tbm, eu tentaria um 'rebuild'. Alem disso, baixaria o ultimo update combo e instalaria por cima para tentar consertar o resto...
